Time to repeal Georgia's ban on Sunday alcohol sales

In the eyes of many people around the world the Southern U.S. is seen as being backwards both in legislature as well as mind-set. Unfortunately Georgia isn't doing anything to offset this view. In fact, the law makers in Georgia seem Hell bent on perpetuating the stereotype that Southerners are ignorant Rednecks.

Woody Bass wrote a great article pointing out the idiocy that is Georgia's ban on Sunday alcohol sales. Georgia is one of a handful of states that still hangs on to the severely antiquated practice of banning stores from selling liquor on the Sabbath. Interestingly it's perfectly legal for bars to sell alcohol on Sunday, you just can't get it at the grocery store.

Now, regardless of all the (correct) arguments that banning alcohol on religious grounds is ridiculous, it's nothing less than idiotic that the state of Georgia views it as being OK to get sloshed at a bar and then get behind the wheel to go home but feel that it's somehow inappropriate to drive to the store sober, buy the beer, drive back home sober and THEN get sloshed.

Come on, Georgia, get with the program here. Stop making yourself and, frankly, anyone who lives in your gorgeous state look like a backwards fool.

The law is stupid and hypocritical. A better solution would be to ban liquor sales after a certain time each and every day. When I lived in Virginia, all alcohol sales were stopped at midnight, and didn't start back until the next morning.

It's not a perfect solution, and doesn't stop drunk drivers from doing their thing... but it's better than saying "You can drink Monday through Saturday, but not Sunday! Good Lord no... not Sunday. Oh wait, go on over to Applebee's if you want a drink."

Wow, this is ridiculous! I thought that it was just that you can't buy it before a certain time, that is crazy!

My county has the laxest rules in my area of Maryland, liquor sales seven days a week, with liquor stores open til midnight during the week and til 2 on Friday and Saturday. Although the neighboring county does have drive through liquor stores, which I still find bizarre.

Yes, the Sunday rule is silly. Drunks can just stock up earlier in the week.

Before the laws were changed in my own state of Mississippi, you couldn't even buy beer on Sunday. Grocery stores would either have to rope off the area or throw a tarp over all the beer and light wine. Of course, I'm just of the opinion that if you can't buy it on Sunday you should stock up on Saturday, but that's just me....

We have the same ban in Colorado. It was recently brought up that the ban be lifted and surprisingly a lot of the opposition was from liquor store owners. I guess they like having the day off.

Probably too people do what Division does, they stock up the day before and boost sales.

Right on! MN has the Sunday 'Blue Laws' too - if we ever get around to repealing it, WI liquor sales are going to take a hit!

I'm a native Georgian transplated to Seattle. Georgia is not alone with its blue laws, although it's almost alone.

There was a wire story Friday about blue laws around the country and the impact on New Year's .... since NYEve is on a Sunday this year.

The move seems to be for patchwork regulation (by county? city?) -- but I think that's stupid, too.

Yeah, it is patchwork. And yeah, it is stupid.

Wish we could buy liquor and beer in the grocery stores here in Ontario .
In Ontario , Canada you cant buy liquor in grocery stores .
Its all monopolized by the Liquor Control Board of Ontario.

Although you can bring your own wine to a restaurant , they make it not worth it to BYOB .
It is available on any Sunday , just not before 12noon , at any watering hole !

                    Antiquated laws ,,,

That's just odd. Like, it's OK to get wasted AFTER noon?!
